In Class - Turn in signed syllabus and current event regarding the war in Afghanistan. Group Work: On the paper provided for you, make a list (prior knowledge) concerning what you already know about the war in Afghanistan. Examples: important people, events, dates, media analysis. On a sheet of paper, respond to the following question: Why isn't there more media coverage concerning the longest war in US history? Hand out article: "Ready for Kickoff." On the back, write down the corporate sponsors that you see advertised in the game. For homework, select five of the corporate sponsors and find out how much they are paying to advertise in the World Cup. Also, hand out articles (4) concerning the Afghanistan war from various publications: "What Should We Do Now," "A Tale of Soldiers and a School," Taking it to the Taliban," "The Surprising Lessons of Vietnam."

Homework - (5) corporate sponsors from the article "Ready to Kickoff." The four articles concerning Afghanistan: summarize each article (one paragraph 6-8 sentences); detailed analysis of each article: What did you learn? What was interesting? What questions do you still have? You need to write three items for each of the questions listed above. Do this for all of these articles. Finally, come up with five (5) arguments that support a continued effort in Afghanistan and five (5) stating we should get out.
