In Class - In Class Writing: Before viewing the documentary, respond to the following question: What does it mean to be an American? After documentary: Have any of your thoughts changed? Watch the documentary "Becoming American" (Link is below). Discuss your writing before and after documentary. Turn in. Group Work: Discuss definition of public opinion and how different factors (age, gender, the media, political party, family, religion) truly shape and persuade the view points of Americans. Why do certain factors have more influence in public opinion? Assign group project: Each group will develop five solid questions concerning Arizona SB 1070. These must be approved by Mr. Palo before you begin the rest of the work. As a group, you will ask people to participate in a public opinion poll. Each group will gather evidence from one hundred people. The questions for each person should be written by the person. Utilize technology, put a link to a website, email, or text people. Each group member is required to do their part. Everyone will be evaluated individually and as a group for this assignment. Upon handing these questions out, be sure to have the participant include the following information: Name, Age (develop an age group: 18-25, 26-35...), Gender, Occupation, and Political Party. Inform the participant that this information is for analysis only, and it is all optional. Library Research: You/your group will find an article regarding the public opinion polls of Arizona SB 1070. Each person must have their own article, however, each group member may use the same article. Print this out before you leave, you will use this later on for this project. Classwork: Hang onto yesterday's homework as some of you may use these resources for the QOD #3. I will collect this first thing tomorrow morning. Continue to develop your arguments in preparation for tomorrow's class discussion.

Homework - 1) Class discussion tomorrow morning regarding Arizona SB 1070. Continue to develop your arguments. Remember, an opinion without evidence is simply that, an opinion. Arguments need evidence! 2) QOD #3: For or against SB 1070. Remember to cite your sources and include a works cited (MLA format).
Citation example: In 2008, Arizona's tourism brought in $18.5 billion in revenues into the state. Even a slight dent in that could be dentrimental to an already fragile state economy (Kohn, 2008).

(Terecita Vega)I am opposed to the S.B 1070 for the reason that it is being unfair to many individuals. The S.B is changing many individuals lifes that live in the United States without any documentation of being legal U.S citizens. This new law is violating the Natural Rights of the people in the United States. The natural rights in the declaration of the United States declares that " all men are created equal ; that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Yet the S.B 1070 being enforced in the State of Arizona is being violated. How are we the citizens of the United States going to be able to trust the federal government of promising the people that they are treating all individuals equally as how it mentions in the declaration of independence, if they can't even follow the federal laws. How is the nation supposed to trust the federal government if they are the ones breaking the law, how are we so sure that later in the future the government is going to be trustworthy of their word.
The immigrants that migrated to our country came for a purpose and not only for selfishness to keep all the jobs and to invade our country. Most of these immigrants came to the United States and sacrificed many valuable things just to get to the United States. Some of the reasons why the came to this country was for a better life-style, education, success, and to be able to have natural rights just like all americans. Unlike the United States our country is free and liberal prior to other countries where their government is commnist and treat their people unfairly. They came to our country to begin a new life and gain more opportunities, and they work hard in order to make this happen so why aren't we giving them that opportunity. Now the only immigrants being deported back to their homelands are the latinos, yet they aren't the only illegal citizens in the United States. There is racism being performed by just deporting the latino immigrants back to their lands, there shouldn't be racism in this country if this country is based on every individual being equal no matter there status. I do not support the S.B 1070 law because its being corrupt and isn't following the natural rights of the people. I don't consider this law fair.

Honestly, I think both sides have there good and bad points, but I am against senate bill 1070. “The Arizona law appears to be facially unconstitutional, States have no power to pass immigration laws because it’s an attribute of foreign affairs (Manheim, 2010).” There we have it, it doesn’t matter that these illegals have no right to be here, it matters that Arizona has no right to meddle in foreign affairs. It’s not even unconstitutional that Arizona is stripping away there natural rights, because they have no rights. It is only unconstitutional because the state doesn’t have the power to do so. “Just as states can’t have their own foreign policies or enter into treaties, they can’t have their own immigration laws either (Manheim, 2010).”
On the other hand, The people of Arizona who are losing money to people who don’t even live here, or who are getting paid much less then they should just to keep up with illegals are not being given their fair share. “These people are giving away our country..we have got to have loyalty to us, to the American family..and that means not giving these rights to people all over the world to come here and dilute and diminish the freedom and the resources available for our own people(Rohrabacher, 2010).” Is it really right to strip away the rights of an American to give someone who doesn’t belong here that persons rights?
